The Lab
Client: Magic Leap
Role: Lead Designer
Project: Over the course of an 18-month engagement, we built The Lab—a unified hub for creators developing spatial computing experiences. In parallel, we elevated the user experience across existing Magic Leap apps, establishing a design language system that complemented and extended the brand across all products.
Challenge: At Magic Leap, developer tools often took a backseat to other product priorities. We identified an opportunity to create a Creative Cloud–like platform—a central hub where spatial computing creators could access Magic Leap’s tools, integrate third-party solutions, and monitor their device status. Partnering closely with a creative director, I developed a narrative presentation that brought the vision of The Lab to life. Our work successfully secured buy-in and set the stage for the initiative.
We created a hub with tools for all creatives working in spatial computing.
The Lab was created to give the spatial computing community a one stop shop of Magic Leap tools, third party tools, industry news, and access to a device dashboard.
We were tasked with improving the user experience of existing Magic Leap apps that live within The Lab.
When we partnered with Magic Leap, the brand emphasized imagination—drawing on metaphors of the ocean and the universe to express the vast possibilities of spatial computing. We translated that spirit into the user experience, using structure, imagery, color, and animation to evoke a sense of exploration and wonder.
To ensure The Lab felt connected to the broader Magic Leap ecosystem, we crafted a design language that blends the parent brand with the on-device brand, creating a seamless bridge between platforms.
I manifested mldb keyboard commands into UI elements on single heroic interface.
Traditionally, developers relied on typing mldb commands to access information about their device. We set out to reimagine this experience by creating a dashboard within The Lab that gave developers and all types of creators a clear, intuitive view into their device. Given the emerging nature of spatial computing, I wanted the dashboard to feel more profound than a conventional grid. Extending the galactic theme of the home screen, key UI elements orbit around the device itself which is positioned as the hero at the center of the experience.
