The Lab
Client: Magic Leap
Role: Lead UX/UI Designer
Team: Me, 1 Creative Director, 1 Project Manager
Project: In a year long and half long engagement we created, The Lab, a unified hub for the development environment for spatial computing experiences for all creators. We also improved the user experience of current Magic Leap apps. Creating a design language system that was complimentary to their brand language across all products.
Challenge: Within Magic Leap the developer tools were a lower priority to the other product offerings. We saw an opportunity to build a Creative Cloud type product where spatial computing creatives could come to access magic leap tools, third-party tools, and have access to the status of their device. I worked closely with a creative director to create a narrative presentation about the possibilities of The Lab which resulted in us getting the work.
We created a hub with tools for all creatives working in spatial computing.
The Lab was created to give the spatial computing community a one stop shop of Magic Leap tools, third party tools, industry news, and access to a device dashboard.
We were tasked with improving the user experience of existing Magic Leap apps that live within The Lab.
At the time of our engagement with Magic Leap, their brand was indexing on imagination, using the vastness of the ocean and the universe as a metaphor for the the possibilities of spatial computing. The user experience we created reflects that imagination through the design choices of structure, imagery, color, animations etc.
In an effort to bridge The Lab to the rest of Magic Leap, the design language is a blend of the parent brand and the on-device brand.
I manifested mldb keyboard commands into UI elements on single heroic interface.
Historically developers would type in an mldb command to get information about their device. We wanted to create a dashboard that would allow a developer or any type of creator to have a view into the device within the Lab. Considering the newness of spatial computing I wanted the dashboard to feel different and more profound than your typical grid. Carrying the galactic theme from the home screen, the important UI elements orbit the device, the hero of the story.
